I am always amazed at how quickly and swiftly time escapes.
There was a little delay sending out ASHLEY'S LIST this month because I decided to take a much needed exploration into my roots in New Zealand. My Granparents and my father live in Auckland. With a recent diagnosis of cancer, my Grandfather doesn't have much "time" left. I called my Dad on a Tuesday, September 27th evening and asked him what he was doing for breakfast on Thursday morning- September 29th. Turns out he wasn't doing much at 5:30am - the time my plane was to arrive. I gave them all 24 hours notice. I have been to New Zealand before- it was about "going to New Zealand" it was more important for me to just see my family. It had been 15 years since I had seen my Grandparents and two years since I had seen my Dad.

I learned so much. I learned how precious time REALLY is and how fortunate we are to have the gift of time and family. Both of which I have taken for granted. It is so easy to get caught up in this whirlwind tour called LIFE. I am so thankful that I got to go and see some of my heritage and bond with my family in a way I haven't done before. We had tea and laughed a lot. My Grandparents are in their mid-80's so the simple things are the most important... as they should be.

I had 14 days to soak it in and it was a blessing. I won't ever forget the gift of time. Some of the things I felt were so important before just aren't that big of a deal. Going to New Zealand also reminded me of how grateful I am for the amazing and supportive familial network I have in Colorado and surrounding states- as well as my dear friends. When all is said and done... these are the things that really matter.

Saying goodbye to my Grandparents was gut wrenching. I knew I wouldn't see them again. I knew that was it. They knew it too. Though there was peace and thankfulness - we held each other and cried. I told my Grandfather I would see him on the other side... and I will.

Someone once said, life can be so bittersweet; more sweet than bitter. So true. I hope this finds you well and warm.
